Idioms on making decisions

In order to get a higher band score on the speaking test it is recommended you use idioms in the correct context and form.

How to avoid using VERY repetitively in IELTS

In the IELTS speaking and writing sections you should try and use a variety of adjectives when describing something. Here are some examples of how to avoid using 'very'.  Put them into practice in your study plan whilst writing and speaking.

IELTS Vocabulary - Idioms related to memory

VOCABULARY	DEFINITION	EXAMPLE
TIP OF MY TONGUE	if a word is on the tip of your tongue, you want to say it but cannot remember it.	One of the characters in the book, his name was, wait a second, it's on the tip of my tongue.
BACK OF MY MIND	you intend to do it, but are not actively thinking about it	There are quite a few things that are in the back of my mind to do but recently I have just been focusing on studying for the IELTS exam.
PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY	you are able to remember things in exact detail	I know a couple of people who have a photographic memory and sometimes I wish I had the same as I am very forgetful.
JOG MY MEMORY	cause someone to remember something suddenly	I usually look at photographs of when I was at school to help me jog my memory of certain people and events.
If memory serves me right	to remember correctly	If my memory serves me right the name of the book is Brave New World, if you haven't read it then I highly recommend it.

IELTS Vocabulary - CAUSE and EFFECT

This range of vocabulary will help your speaking and more importantly your writing. The vocabulary may be easy but using it correctly and effectively or as in the IELTS band descriptors states using the vocabulary "precisely" will increase your band score in the respective category.

VOCABULARY	DEFINITION	EXAMPLE
IMPACT	a powerful effect that something has on a situation or person	The anti-smoking campaign launched by health authorities has had a major impact on young smokers.
OUTCOME	the final result of an activity or process	The Chinese government announced that they will be removing old vehicles from their roads in order to improve air quality, but some argue that the outcome will be the same as it is today.
REPERCUSSION	the effect that an action, event, or decision has on something, especially a bad effect	If a country's main sector is tourism and the country experiences a decline in the numbers of tourists visiting country this would have serious repercussions for the local and national economy of the country.
CHAIN REACTION	A chain reaction is a series of events which causes the next	The chemical immediately ignited when it came into contact with the air and set off a chain reaction of explosions.
AFFECT	To cause a person or thing to change in some way	With the storm hitting the western coast of the country affecting thousands of people living in the region.

IELTS Vocabulary - GEOGRAPHY

This vocabulary list is multi-functional as you will need this for your speaking and writing possibly on the topics of towns, cities and you may across this vocabulary in the reading section.

VOCABULARY	DEFINITION	EXAMPLE
Coastline	A coastline or seashore connecting land and sea	The biggest island near Istanbul; Buyukada is made up of some amazing cliffs, rocky shores and beaches.
Densely populated	Population density means that a large number of people live in a very limited amount of space	Istanbul is a densely populated city with about 20 million people living there.
Urban sprawl	The spread of a city outwards into the areas that surround the city	Governments around the world are trying to resolve the issue of urban sprawl.
Overcrowding	to fill way beyond what is usual or comfortable: to have too many people	Public transport is a major issue in most cities as they are overcrowded.
North / South / East / West	NORTH: the direction that is on your left when you face towards the rising sun. SOUTH: the direction that is on your right when you face towards the rising sun. EAST: the direction that you face to see the sun rise. WEST:  the direction that you face to see the sun go down	The Black Sea lies to the north of Turkey.   There are some beautiful beaches in the south of the country.  The west of Turkey has some amazing coastlines.  The east of Turkey borders with Iran and Iraq.

IELTS Vocabulary - STREET MARKETS

Some vocabulary to discuss street markets.

VOCABULARY	DEFINITION	EXAMPLE
BARGAIN	something bought for less than the usual price	Goods can usually be bought at bargain prices in street markets.
BRIC-A-BRAC	small decorative objects of various types and of no great value	In some street markets you will find stalls that are full of bric-a-brac, the famous open street market being Portobello Road Market in London.
CUT-PRICE	describes something that costs less than its usual price	In street markets you can always find good quality cut-price clothing.
HUSTLE AND BUSTLE	noise and activity	I love the hustle and bustle of the street markets in Istanbul, especially the big open market on the Anatolian side of Istanbul.
HAGGLE	argue with somebody in order to reach an agreement, especially about the price of something	In Turkey, it is traditional to haggle over the price of everything in markets.

IDIOMS

Just a few idioms for you to use in the speaking section of the IELTS examination, of course if the topic is appropriate.

VOCABULARY	DEFINITION	EXAMPLE
Cool as a cucumber	someone is very calm, especially when in a difficult or frustrating situation	Selin (our programme co-coordinator) was as cool as a cucumber last Saturday when the phones didn't stop ringing and there were hundreds of people asking the same questions over and over again.
To come down with something	to start to become ill with a disease that is not serious such as the flu or a cold	I feel a lot better now after I came down with the flu last week.
Burn off	to get rid of extra energy or fat by doing physical exercise	I ate and drank too much over the New Year's holiday, so now I have to get to the gym and burn off the extra fat.
Sleep in	to sleep till later in the morning than you normally do	I love sleeping in on Sundays, waking up around 11 am.
To be partied out	you have had enough of parties because you went to many in a very short time	After two weeks of different parties; birthdays, engagements and weddings I feel totally partied out!

GATHER	a party or a meeting when many people come together as a group	On Christmas Day in many countries around the world, families and relatives gather together to enjoy and celebrate Christmas together.
TRADITIONAL	a belief, principle, or way of acting that people in a particular society have      continued to follow for a long time	A traditional Christmas dinner especially in the UK is usually a turkey, with cranberries and roast potatoes followed by a Christmas pudding.
RESOLUTIONS	a promise to yourself to do or to not do something	Every year I make a resolution that I will lead a healthier lifestyle and start going to the gym. For 2014, one of my resolutions is that I am definitely going to start looking after myself.

Christmas is celebrated by billions of people around the world by Christians and non-Christians.  People start getting ready for their Christmas holidays on Christmas EVE (24^th December) when families and friends start GATHERING in anticipation of Christmas Day. The TRADITIONAL food on Christmas Day is turkey with lots of side dishes and followed by Christmas pudding.  The followıng day, on Boxing Day (26^th December) people and especially the Church make DONATIONS to those who need it the most.   Then on New Year’s EVE    (31^st December) everyone starts getting prepared for the arrival of the New Year and when people start making RESOLUTIONS of things they will do and thing they will not do for the following year.
